Alien Reflections : A David 8 Character Study PART ONE

(A/N: This was started a couple of weeks ago, not long after I became ill and thus this was put on the back burner. I know Alien Covenant comes out this week I can’t wait to see it.)

En-light of the new Ridley Scott movie Alien Covenant coming out in just under two weeks, I thought I’d share my thoughts on his previous work Prometheus, as well as my interpretation concerning David’s fixation with Elizabeth Shaw.

I remember when Ridley Scott’s Prometheus came out in June of 2012. I went to see it with a friend of mine. Prior to its release, I was intrigued with what I saw in the trailers, coupled with the fact that I had (and still have) a MASSIVE crush on Michael Fassbender (dating all the way back to the movie 300.) it was one of the few things I was excited about for 2012. (Well that and the Summer Olympics.)

I can honestly say I am probably one of the small, very, very small group of people who went into the movie not knowing of its “Alien” connection. I thought it was just another summer sci-fi movie by a well-known director. I had no massive expectations other than “I love Sci-Fi, this is something I want to see.” I don’t even think I went to see it on its opening weekend. You must understand my movie going experiences tend to revolve around my pay check and no matter how badly I want to go to a particular film, I can’t go if I’m broke.

Thusly, in retrospect I believe this gave me a sort of advantage towards the film because I could look at it with eyes not tainted (or jaded) by what came before it.

That being said I have seen Aliens, bits of Alien Resurrection, AVP and AVP2. (Say what you will about AVP the black girl SURVIVED! I know it’s not Cannon and I don’t care, I love that movie. NO one can change my mind lol*) Now to be honest I don’t recall watching Alien 3 and I may have seen snippets of the original movie Alien when I was younger, though I am not 100% sure on that.

So going into Prometheus without that pre-hand knowledge didn’t affect my opinion of the movie. However, I knew that David was an android before I saw the film, so I wasn’t completely blind to that fact. I think I found out about it not to long before its release. I’m just not sure on the when, only I know I KNEW that fact.

Anyways I LOVED Prometheus, it was amazing, from the opening shot of the Sacrificial Engineer, to the wide shot of LV-223, to the introduction of David and the establishment of his… well let’s just call them “quirks” for now. From creepy Vickers and even that damn C-section scene that had me squirming in my seat whilst holding my own damn stomach and swearing off children FOREVER.

I LOVE THIS DAMN FILM! It’s one of those rare pieces of cinematic art that manages to strike some kind of hidden cord. Which then resonates inside of me, making itself unforgettable. I left the movie theater like a lot of people with more questions than answers. I wanted to know more, I wanted to understand what it was that I had just watched. I needed to understand why this movie left me so affected.  Why did this film lead me into a mild obsession of sorts with the character David 8?

AND speaking of Mr. David 8… I 1000%, wholeheartedly believe he is in love with Elizabeth Shaw.
