Alien Reflections : A David 8 Character Study PART FOUR

A/N: No recap today since this post is so late. So lets just jump right in shall we?

D: Big things have small beginnings.

No truer words were ever spoken.

Creation is the theme of this movie, it’s talked about over and over again. It’s the very first scene in Prometheus, it’s what drives David’s incessant desires and curiosity. It’s the reason the expedition to LV-223 was made in the first place. It’s mention again in the scene with the re-awakened Engineer and briefly hinted at in the Prologue for Alien Covenant, but more on that later.

If you will indulge me for a moment, let’s circle back to the “point of no return” aka the moment where David spikes Not-Tom-Hardy’s drink.

NTH: You think we wasted our time coming here, don’t you?

D: Your question depends on me understanding, what you hope to achieve by coming here?

NTH: What we hope to achieve? Well, it’s to meet our makers. To get answers. Why they… why they even made us in the first place.

D: Why do you think your people made me?

NTH: We made you cause we could.

D: Can you imagine how disappointing it would be for you to hear the same thing from your creator?

[NTH laughs]

NTH: I guess it’s a good thing you can’t be disappointed, huh?

D: Yes, it’s wonderful actually.

D: May I ask you something?

NTH: Please do.

D: How far would you go to get what you came all this way for? Your answers? What would you be willing to do?

NTH: Anything and everything.

D: That’s worth drinking to I’d imagine.

  • (Okay 4th wall break, HOW THE FU*K DID Not-Tom-Hardy not SEE David put his finger in his drink!? HOW!? It was OBVIOUS! David didn’t even TRY to hide it! Sorry I just needed to get that off my chest…)

I know I posted the first half of that conversation already in a previous blog, but I had to include it here again because of the significance of what’s being said.

This scene represents a turning point which lead me to wonder (and not for the first time.), that if Not-Tom-Hardy had not been such an ass to David would he still be alive? I know an argument can be made that David was only following Weyland’s orders of “Try harder.” If that’s the case then shouldn’t any member of the Prometheus crew suffice?

Why pick Not-Tom-Hardy? Because it was personal for David that’s why.

Here’s my thought, putting aside the connection Not-Tom-Hardy has with Shaw, NTH and Weyland have a lot in common.

  •       Both want to meet their maker.
  •      Both have a certain lack of faith.
  •      Weyland considers himself equal to the “Gods”.
  •      NTH after being disillusioned, thinks that creation and the Engineers are nothing special after all anyone can do it.
  •      And most importantly, BOTH think they are superior to David.

In Weyland’s case it’s because he created David and therefore David should be loyal and obedient to him for he is his “God.”  (We all know how David feels about that…) Yet it doesn’t stop Weyland from being envious of his creation.  For it is as Weyland says, David will never grow old and never die.

On the other hand Not-Tom-Hardy feels superior over David for the simple fact that he is human, which is something David can “never” be. (For now at least…) Not-Tom-Hardy never treats David as human (as an equal) because he doesn’t see him as such.

I think and I could be wrong, that NTH feels threatened by the idea of David.  It’s a fear that lots of people have of being replaced by machines. As technology becomes faster, more precise, more intelligent, soon there will come a time where there will be no difference between a human and a robot. There will be nothing that makes humanity special.

So with phrases like “He will never have a soul…” and “You’re not a real boy…” both Not-Tom-Hardy and Weyland constantly assert their “dominance” over David. Reminding him of his inhumanity and how he can never be anything other than a creation who takes orders from his masters.

However, this type of “lording over” tactic ultimately backfires. For David is more human than either Weyland and Not-Tom-Hardy (or anyone for that matter.) realizes.

We are privy to it in glimpses throughout Prometheus and in Alien Covenant’s prologue. Maybe Weyland put a bit more of “himself” into his creation than he thought, we’ll never know for sure.

What we do know is that with a simple phrase, Big things have small beginnings…”  David gets a taste for creation and everyone who comes in contact with him will suffer for it.

Especially Elisabeth Shaw…

One more thing, note David’s surprised reaction at seeing Shaw enter Weyland’s medical room. It is safe to assume he thought her in cryo-sleep.

Later on, when they meet in the airlock antechamber, I found their exchange fascinating. Similar to how a scientist records audio notes when conducting an experiment or autopsy.  David comments on Shaw’s survival instinct in a curious, clinical, almost detached sort of way. A first for him.

In addition, this scene is also the first time David uses Shaw’s given name, and continues to do so for the remainder of Prometheus. This change I believe signifies the growth of David into a ‘person’ (of sorts.) as he sheds his servitude attitude and becomes… more.

Lastly, up until now I have deliberately kept from mentioning Alien Covenant’s Walter for a reason. However I just want to say this about the two, if you can go to Youtube and watch the “Happy Birthday David” viral clip and the “Meet Walter” viral clip. Study the two videos closely; I’ll share my thoughts about them tomorrow.
