Alien Reflections : A David 8 Character Study PART FIVE
A/N: Well! It’s Friday!! We’ve made it to the end of the week! I’m going to try and see Alien Covenant this weekend so no spoilers please! Anywho, before I begin I just want to thank all those who have liked this little series of mine. It means a lot to me, it really does.
Okay so let’s get into it.

Take a good look at these two pictures above, one is from the “Meet Walter” clip and the other is from the “Happy Birthday David” clip.
Up until now I have resisted the urge to post any screenshots during my David 8 analysis, nor mention Walter in any way. One of the reasons why I was mum about Walter is because I just don’t know much about him. Outside of the fact that he is supposed to have no emotions, I’ve seen no other real indication of his character.
That being said I do find the viral video about him sort of telling. The stark contrast between the “birth” of Walter and the “birth” of David is startling. David’s creation seems so cold and impersonal. It feels manufactured, yet at the same time look how he is positioned. His body language is defenseless, vulnerable. Also, is it just me or doesn’t he remind you of a child in the womb? Upon seeing David twitch, then gasp his first breath of life alone in a bag just leaves me a bit unsettled.
And then… there’s Walter. Right from the get go there is a different tone in his creation. It’s much more personal, you see there is care going into bringing Walter to life. The manner in how it is all portrayed, from the dutiful attendants, to the overall atmosphere and how Walter is “cared” for feels almost ceremonial… dare I say even religious?
In any case it, at the very least, gives off the impression that he is something important. As if Walter, not David was the prodigal son that Weyland wanted, even though the man himself is long dead and gone. If you were to ask me, that seems a bit odd. Shouldn’t it be the other way around? Shouldn’t David’s creation be treated with such reverence, while Walter is the one whose mass produced for the masses?
After all David is the one with emotions right? He’s the one designed to be perfectand to never fail if I’m not mistaken. Well that’s just my two cents on it any ways.
I’d like to point out one more thing before I move on. In the shot from Walter’s viral clip, just before he says his name, doesn’t that light look JUST LIKE A FREAKIN 8!? I wonder if that clip is hinting that Walter might be more like David then we think?
Unfortunately that’s all I have to say about Walter because that’s all the information I have about him.
So! Let’s return to the main point that may have brought you here, my rather bold declaration of David being in love with Shaw. Where is my proof? As I stated in my second post pay attention to how he treats Shaw throughout the entirety of Prometheus. There is a tenderness and care in his actions.
Shaw is the only one that David has a real genuine respect for, because despite all that she’s been through… all that David has put her through; she still retained her faith and her belief. Also in a very… VERY extreme sense of irony David is able to give her something that not even “God” could do.
He gives Shaw a child… okay it’s a very murderous, alien child sure! But its Shaw’s nonetheless.
Let’s talk about the prologue to Alien Covenant shall we? Listen to David’s tone of voice when he speaks of Shaw (note he’s still calling her Elizabeth…) he is surprised by her compassion. He states she’s the first to EVER show him any kindness and mean it. The look that David gives Shaw when he calls her “very kind at heart” is a look of love. Pure love. Somehow, in his own unique way David has fallen in love with Elizabeth Shaw. He draws Shaw pictures and is seen trying to make her happy, most likely in an attempt to take her mind off of LV-223.
Another thing to note in the prologue is how he speaks. It’s almost as if he thinks he’s human. He calls the Engineers “our creators” when we ALL know who really made David.
Something has changed in David and its being hinted at in this clip. Maybe it’s the result of his injury from the Awakened Engineer or maybe it was already there in the first place.
Whatever it was, make no mistake, there’s humanity in David now and I am curious to see where it leads too.
And for now I shall end it here! Thanks again for reading this! I really appreciate all the note love!
